The funnyman, who split from Perry in December after a 14-month marriage - made quips about the end of the relationship in his opening monologue at the ceremony.
'Last time I did an MTV show I ended up marrying someone,' he told the audience. 'Tonight I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for my next wife.
Brand also took the opportunity to take potshots at Kim Kardashian for her short-lived marriage to Kris Humphries, saying, 'Kim took a lot of pressure off with her world record marriage - thanks, Kim.'
And others who bore the brunt of Brand's jokes included Charlie Sheen and John Travolta - with the funnyman encouraging Sheen to indulge in some wild behaviour in a bid to distract the audience.

'I've taped a bottle of Hennessy and a gram of coke under your chair,' he told the actor. 'In case I start going crazy just nick it and do a couple of lines...release the tiger blood hero!'
And he told the audience that he had prepared for the hosting gig by giving John Travolta a massage, referencing the recent tabloid speculation after the actor was accused of sexual assault by a male masseur.
The ceremony, which took place at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, saw The Hunger Games take home four prizes, including best actor and actress for Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence.
It was also a good night for Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1, which won two awards including best film.
