It is a common scenario in the Nigerian Uk community to have the Showbiz circle mainly dictated to by the sound from home.It is no big deal for music to have been well savored on the streets of Lagos,Ibadan,abuja,Porth Harcourt,Benin or Jos before the Nigerians in the UK can have their salivating palate satisfied .Usually in the form of the reigning Artist finally taking pity on this side of the Atlantic but you wonder why with teeming youths and supposed Talent in the UK,it is almost impossible for Nigerians here to launch successful Showbiz Careers.A few factors can be responsble for this as voiced by artistes,Reord Label Owners,Event Organisers and so on that our team chatted with at various times.
A few people believe creativity is stunted in the UK as most creative people need to head out as early as 3am most days to do jobs dubbed 'Early Morning',others who get out a bit later probably run from one job to the other and many who do Security Jobs would stand outside in the cold for hours hence get so tired on returning that music tunes might not come that easy to their head.
It is also being mouthed that the 9ja UK audience does not respect artistes from here and citing examples of Don Jazzy and DBanj,many feel that you need to go home before you can be accepted.Maybe,one could say,it is indeed a reversal of what obtains years back when foreign seems better in Nigeria.
No wonder then,at the Redcarpet here, Celebs from Nigeria usually swell up ten times their size as the UK fans seem to accept anything even when the Celeb isn't A-list back home.
For atleast three years now,we cannot point to an Event here where an all naija UK artist thrilled,instead cases abound where they only support or act as the Opener for the 'big boys' from home.
What could be done not necessarily to stop this trend but to find a balance? Or is it that not enough is being done generally?
