My Father’s Last Action-Barr Debe Syvester Ojukwu
The 21ist of January,2012 saw a large gathering of Nigerians and friends of Nigerians celebrating the late Igbo leader ,Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in a Requiem Mass(Mass for the Dead);held at the Westminister Cathedral which was built between 1895 and 1903.The Cathedral which sits about 2000 people was more than half filled despite the cold winter weather conditions. The Mass itself a conclusion of series of such held over several weeks by various Catholic and Igbo groups in the United Kingdom is also unprecedented in terms of Igbo people’s gathering in the UK.
The Deceased first son, Barrister Debe Sylvester Odumegwu Ojukwu (Akpunwa Nnewi) who flew in from Nigeria with his daughter (Stella) to grace the history making Mass seemed to be warmly welcome with the distinguished guests of top Nigerians in the UK at the events, such as Amb.Dozie Nwanna, the deputy High Commissioner of Nigeria to the United Kingdom, Executives of CANUK ,Chief Bimbo Roberts, Mr sola Ogunseitan and so on ,Councillor Ade Aminu of Lambeth Council, London. Also in attendance was the Deputy Mayor of Enfield and an impressive representation of Igbo Communities in the UK, who chiefly powered the event. The new date for the final burial we learnt is the 1st of March,2012.
Speaking during and after the 2 hours long event, Barrister Debe Ojukwu led tributes to his Father. Excerpts.
We have a spiritual connection through my Father to the United Kingdom. He lived here and spent his formative years in the United Kingdom. Epsom College, Lincoln College, Oxford University ,he had his formative years also at Mans Cadet Officers School, his final years were again spent in the UK ,transversing some of the most excellent Medical Institutions in the UK. Name it, the London Clinic,The Wellington Hospital, and the Royal Berkshire Hospital to mention some of them. We have by birth been seriously attached to the United Kingdom, UK has been a cradle, a sanctuary and has been a home for which we will be eternally grateful. Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu lived well, explaining in part our full presence here today. He was our Champion,explaining in order, our loss,our hopelessness in losing him among us. No single human being has been able to alter that trajectory called life, the sole prerogative of altering it has forever remained in the Sanctuary of the will of the Almighty. We can therefore not question God but take consolation in the life he has lived. And then fully abstract and appropriate what his life has portended. He has portended peace, unity and public service. I leave you here today to go back to Nigeria; I go back to Nigeria tomorrow morning with a message. I go back to Nigeria consoled and happy. The message I will take to Nigeria is that I met u, I met you well and I left you well.
I will rather recount one of my Father’s last actions because in the last days he wanted to say much but because of the attack he lost his voice and when I was at Wellington Hospital with him, I remonstrated with him, I looked at him, he saw me and was moved. I told him,not for you but for the people, that God’s promise in the Bible is that his people will not perish and things you represent in people. If you leave us now, what will the People do? I touched his head and he brought back the last ounce of energy in him and press his head against me, so, when I told him I was going, he felt it so much. Then at the Royal Hospital, at each visit, I say the Rosary for two weeks with my family. He and I were Mass Servers in earlier years hence I always say the Cradle, he always loved the Mass said in Latin, so in my last prayer with him when I took the Canticle of the Saints totally and when we said the Grace, he wanted to shout Amen. And he made this noise that I shook and wanted to ask who said that?. My wife, his Chief of Staff and everyone could not believe it. He wanted to say the prayers but the voice was failing gradually.
He was a very loving father, a consummate Administrator and Politician. That was how he came across to me, in our privacy,you see the real him playing out.

OJUKWU'S BURIAL KICKS OFF
It was a gathering of many nigerians and friends of nigerians in their hundreds earlier today at the Westminister Cathedral where the Requiem Memorial Service for the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was held.The service which kicked off at 1.30 pm as announced saw the best of the Catholic Church mode of worship spice with beautiful and moving Igbo rendition.The Congregation could not help but appreciate the sonorous Igbo worship songs which practically transformed the Central London Cathedral to similar ones in the predominantly Chritian Eastern part of Nigeria.The event which had in attendance a good representation of Nigerians in diaspora, was an initiative of several Igbo Communities in the UK.The history making event is also hoped to be a new dawn for the unity of the Igbos in the UK.Many guests were captivated by the tribute from the Chief Mourner and son of the late Igbo Leader,Barrister Debe Sylvester Odumegwu Ojukwu.He revealed that the large turn out is indeed a great honour done the late Ojukwu.

back in Nigeria is attempting to run for the number one office in London-The
Mayor.
London, which shapes almost everything in the
United Kingdom has diverse Communities, the number one man in London could even
be more accepted than the Prime Minister sometimes, so listening to very
ambitious and passionate Femi Solola delivering a passionate appeal at
his Fundraising Dinner held recently makes many admire his courage
and spirit. His motto, creating a better London, is further explained by thus:
Intelligent people suffer the agonies of fools ruling them when they refuse to
participate in Politics. Politics is about providing qualitative service for
the people, meeting their needs, giving answers to their questions and finding
solutions to their problems.Our team did not mince world in asking him if he feels it is going to be an easy ride, he opened up briefly below.
“In London, people are living in poverty and cannot make
ends meet. The government is telling people to endure suffering. I am here to
ensure we live well, and many time fares are increased incessantly. People’s
problems are being increased. I am here with a different mindset to solve problems.if
the present Government is doing well I would not bother.

London is a melting point for the whole world, the heartbeat
and financial capital. There is no nationality you won’t find here. I have a
good idea of the people, my policies are people centred and this present
government has no clue. London has many intelligent and hardworking people. I

Politics is service to mankind and humanity. You do not
study it in School. People with the gift of Politics are not in government in London
that is the problem we have here. All my life I have been serving people, as a Teacher
and a Police Community Officer. The people I taught in School are successful
Professionals now.

That is the easiest part.89% of Labour funding is from the Union,
the Conservatives are sponsored by the Rich. I will be sponsored by the
ordinary people on the street, people who want change and progress.

of networking. I have not gone to the Media yet as they are not the people to vote.

I was born in Nigeria in Ibadan, 44 years ago. I studied
English in Ogun State University, I taught the subject for a few years and I
contested but lost to go to the House of Representatives. I came to the UK and
worked with the Metropolitan Police here. I resigned to contest for the Office
of the Mayor.
WHAT IS THE PICTURE NOW
I see overwhelming victory because people are tired. They do
not want to come out and cast their votes because of the unpopular Candidates
being paraded. I know there are a few Candidates coming out now.

Oluwunmi Olapeju Mosaku, born in Zaria,Nigeria 25 years ago
is one of the few British actresses of Nigeria origin who make one feels proud
to be black. Wunmi Mosaku as she is popularly known schooled in England and

THE FINAL COME DOWN CAME-MICHAEL EGBEJUMI-DAVID
Michael Egbejumi- David has written a book that seems so honest that even the Author confessed to a sort of naivety. A disarming one if you go through the highly contemporary yet with enough dose of African richness pages of his book, titled, ‘The Final Come Down Came’.
When you meet Dr Egbejumi-David for the first time, you will be amused at how he almost automatically tries to omit the usually highly coveted DR title from his name. A leading Neurologist with decades of medical practice, he stands tall(physically and safe to say, mentally) above many others in the UK.A lot of Nigerians are usually impressed to see their Compatriots in choice professional posts in the Queensland yet Michael takes all in his stride and seem to presently prefer to be known as a Writer. A series of articles mainly on Online media like Saharareporters.com,Nigerianvillagesquare.com,Huhuonline.com,Nigerianarticles.com and a few traditional publications back home sees a large fan base for his writing. A few people assume his works which are largely social commentary might be the main theme of his book but The Final Come Down Came is romance. It features the struggle to work through deception that threatens the union of a Nigerian Couple in the UK, DR Joyce and Fred. According to Michael, The book came as a result of the response from readers when he wrote a series of articles that could be termed soft or lifestyle, ‘For Men Only’ a few years ago. More than anything it showed that people yearn for contemporary works, he concludes. One could not agree more as there is indeed a growing clan of African Writers especially in the diaspora who do not wish to be boxed into writing mainly African folklore, witchcraft, politics or rural setting before being accepted. I t comes to the fore when even Africans tend to assume that talking about modern lifestyle is the exclusive of Western Writers. Michael opined, “I try to write about what I know and see every day”.
Who is not represented in this fast read book? That is the question as in music, King Sunny Ade’s Syncro system, E ki lo f’omode and other classics are proudly enjoyed alongside, Victor Uwaifo, Rex Jim Lawson, Chaka Khan ,The Oriental Brothers, Osita Osadebey , Chris Okotie, Mariam Makeba, Sade and Babyface. The Literary world had Chris Anyanwu, Professor Wole Soyinka and Dr Chinua Achebe’s intimidating presence. Not done, London Landmarks especially Nigerian enclaves are clearly stated such as Lagos Island, Mama Calabar, Wazobia , Obalende Suya and the Dalston Market which is like Yaba Market got a full account. Right now, one cannot readily name a novel that mentions NTA International but not only can it be found in Michael’s book ,Raymond Dokpesi’s DAAR Communication’s Shares as well as Alistair Soyode’s BEN are on the roll call. The BBC and Fox News got their work mentioned (positively for the former and outright Thumb down for the latter) as the book reminded many of the failed media smear of Obama by FOX News pre-inauguration coverage tint with racism, and of course Obama’s historical inauguration as America’s 44th President on the 20th of January, 2009.Not too surprising then that Nollywood and Kanayo .O.Kanayo surfaced along the line. The social online media like Facebook, Nigerian Village Square were debated by the main Characters in the book and the reader was left with a choice of the pros and cons.

Social Commentary cannot be excused from the book and it runs through various chapters. Michael deftly employed the conversations of Joyce friends and her professional Colleagues (Medical Doctors at Family Association of Nigerian Doctors, FANDOC meetings) to chew many issues facing Africans and the world at large. The usually quota system of having a lone black person especially at choice positions, probably faced professionally by Michael was noted, the influx of Eastern Europeans who can do most menial jobs thereby making more African Immigrants jobless featured. The case of having a Spouse to join one in the UK longest for Africans compared to other races was lamented, likewise the sometimes ill treatment of Nigerians aboard British Airways was roundly criticised. Many people in the Western world might agree with Michaels’s point of view about black ladies dating very much older white men compared to black men who seem to find it easier to date white ladies closer to their ages. Despite pointing out a seemingly rip off of the Congregation by Churches in the Nigerian UK community, The sustaining power of Religious groups especially in times of crisis was acknowledged by the Writer who observed that it is rare to see a Nigerian Christian not going to Church in the UK these days.
Dr Egbejumi-David makes you see the Medical profession and Doctors in a more understanding light, even taking us through a Neuro Surgery Procedure at a stage, yet despite being on a medical sojourn from age sixteen, you cannot help but notice a bit of irony in his view of medicine as a quotation from his book reads,” My job is like a Sponge, it is for ever demanding and never turned down additional input”. At a stage when Dr Joyce tried to chastise her friend for unhealthy eating habit, the Medical Profession comes into the book again thus “The way the blood flows freely in your veins and arteries offends you, doesn’t it?”..
The rich and easy use of African proverbs and similes can be appreciated by the Reader as the chapters unfold.
The title though not the longest anywhere could be said to be the remnant of Michaels’s American sojourn. A faint trace of American accent could be heard from his accent as well, spiced with some British intonations. For someone who admitted to never dreaming of writing a book, Michael’s book easily holds one spell bound from the first page as Joyce walked in to read a diary of her partner Fred about her, which was not positive for her image, she decided not to confront him right away and a moving romantic session followed. She however had more damages done to her ego when ,not only did she discover he bought a house without her knowledge but a girl was resident in the house, all the way from Nigeria, claiming Fred was her Fiancé. All hell was let loose from then and Elderly family members and Joyce friends especially tried to bring the couple back together. The book indeed addresses the incessant cases of Females locking their Spouses out of the house in the UK and also the large divorce cases as well. In fact almost every aspect t of Africans live in diaspora was reflected in the book. With different reactions from people like,Rueben Abati, Okey Ndibe and a few others ,Michael supplied that he wanted to write something light, fictional yet factual. He describes his book as a light breezy read. Armed mainly with a Secondary School Press Club experience unlike many Writers of today, usually self –depreciating Michael refers to himself as untrained. Yet, one cannot fail to appreciate his humorous style of delivery which makes his works easily entertaining. With a second book already started, and offers of Columns and more writing coming his way, Michael seems to be settling well in the Publishing world. Amazon, Tesco, Waterstones and Author House,(the Publishers of the book) sell the book which can also be bought directly from Michael. Hugely influenced by expectations of his late Parents, Michael studied at St Paul’s Primary School, Lagos, Hussey College Warri and initially hoping to be a Pilot like his Father had to settle for Medicine with his Father’s insistence. Medicine life includes Brazil, New York and the UK.

Lagos born Michael who hails from Warri, Delta state is a father of three kids. He could be seen at Urhobo Community events in the UK lately especially as he laments losing touch with his Nigerianess while building his professional life. Hard work and not taking life too seriously or life passes one by are his guiding principle in life he says. With acknowledgements of the likes of Dele Momodu, Joan o’sa oviawe, Irene Akpofure, Olufemi Segun, Wale Akintunde, Julius Odiase and a host of others, one could say, DR Michael Egbejumi-David, who plans to make reading amongst Nigerians trendy again, is a Writer many will enjoy especially with his easy and witty style of delivery.
