MY FATHER'S 51 CHILDREN AND SEVERAL WOMEN TAUGHT ME VITAL LESSONS-MAKOLA MAMBO

MAKOLA MAMBO

MAKOLA AND SADE ADU

MY FATHER’S 51 CHILDREN AND SEVERAL WOMEN TAUGHT ME VITAL LESSONS-MAKOLA MAMBO
UK based ace Nigerian Musician Kolawole Gani-Kale ,popularly known as Makola Mambo unknown to many is the son of Late  60’s  Highlife Musician, Ganiyu Kale and his Guinea Mambo Orchestra, whose song, ‘ Aya mi ye’ ,could be found on you tube  presently. An unapologetic Polygamist, Ganiyu Kale had 51 children and several women surviving him when he died on the 2nd of February, 2011 at the age of  81.Makola could be said to be one of the most improved Musicians among Nigerians in the UK as he experiments with tunes from greats like Osita Osadebey, The Oriental Brothers, spiced with the usual Juju flavour. He is also an encyclopaedia of sort of what we now regard as contemporary Juju music, not by choice but by birth and fate. The Music Graduate of the University of Nigeria  ,Nsukka  said he never wanted to do anything from the Cradle but music..'Oke Aminu, Chief Ebenezer Obey and so on had their paths crossed with my late father ‘,he revealed. Chatting with Makola was inspiring and enlightening; his is a story of survival, loyalty to music and keeping faith with fate.Enjoy.
AT THE UNIVERSITY

‘I DIDN’T GO TO SECONDARY SCHOOL’.
The young Kola who attempted GCE and failed woefully, sought help at an Evening Lesson Session. A second attempt saw him passing with flying colours to further his education at The University of Nigeria to study Music. Makola, though the best Pupil in his Primary School due to the domestic strife at home ,no  thanks to polygamy related issues had run away from home before age ten to join a number of music Bands. The youngster whose mum was the first wife witnessed his mum 's separation from her husband who had dumped music for business. He ran property, cargo, transportation and so many other businesses that ensured he enjoyed a wealthy life with all its temptations..The young Makola, with no maternal protection at an early age, getting into secondary school was not easy. Even a self attempt at enrolment proved futile and along the line, the young boy was influenced by a musician tenant of his father, Champion Kunle Okuneye who he accompanied to parties, playing the guitar. At a stage he was deceived that a certain Band owner would send him to school if he plays in the band, with a note under his father’s door, he head out to play for late Queen Decency, whose Band was reorganised by another woman after her death. The woman, Madam Comfort, of Comfort and Prestige Hotel, Lagos;placed him in the Church Choir, fed and housed him. But even when the food was not forthcoming, the youngster persevered, with the hope of getting academic sponsorship. One day, spotting his father’s Mercedes at the Hotel, he ran from his base thinking his father came for him and headed for Ibadan, but it turned out the father came to patronise the Hotel and had no inkling of his son’s new home.
At Ibadan, not knowing anyone but resolute, he flagged down, a few Musical Bands’ Vehicles, hoping to join them. The first was Micho Ade,then that of Awuja Bello, with no luck of stopping, he eventually had that of Olalekan Oloyode stopping to hear him out, after asking to join and was refused, he introduced himself as a Guitarist and that was his ticket. Makola became a member of Olalekan Oloyode's Band and family but when after a few months he tried to leave the Band to join Abiodun Omoleye ,where Wale Thompson (of Lalale Friday fame) was a member, trouble brewed. He left but was forced back by Olalekan Oloyode.

‘THE CHURCH SAVED ME ‘.

The centre could not hold at a stage and a visit to his Mum saw her taking him to her church, after the visit, he joined Professor Alladin Band at Sagamu but eventually Lagos beckoned and after several attempts , with another visit to his mum who had her Prophet convincing him to stay. And with the offer of  50 naira monthly salary, playing in the Church Choir,Makola agreed. Training under the Church Organist who was a student of  the University of Nigeria,Nsukka then greatly influenced Makola’s choice of Tertiary Institution. He became a Born Again Christian in the University and decided to work only in the Church but further exploitation saw him disillusioned and with matrimony and hope to move on, he proceeded to the UK .

'MUSIC IS MY FIRST RELIGION'.
The reason I joined the Church is because of music. I believe in God and humanity but no religion can take me away from music. It is all I ever wanted to do. My Father never wanted us to play music, I am the only one of 51 children playing but later on, he blessed me to succeed in music. I earned money as a  Piano Teacher in the University, music paid for my schooling. I could not afford to fail as my Mum (Janet Omolabake) sold all her gold to send me off to the University. My name Makola Mambo is from Music Ambassador, Kola and Mambo from my dad. People call me Music Ambassador because of my passion for anything Nigerian Music. Mambo because despite everything ,I love my Dad. I look so much like him and the music gene is from him. I acknowledge my roots in my music even the Lagos Island heritage. Our Fathers made many mistakes ,then,it was all about them. This should be a guiding principle for our generation.I learnt vital lessons from my backround, they are my guiding principle in life.

MAKOLA AND AYO BALOGUN
LEKE LEVITES INFLUENCED THE KIND OF MUSIC I PLAY NOW
Makola, with his music degree and years on the streets landed in the UK, miming American songs in Pubs and Bars mainly to a White audience but on his first visit to London, at the Train Station ,he saw Leke Levites and a few other artistes carrying musical instruments. He approached them and introduced himself as a musician. The first day he watched Leke performed at Gabby’s Lagos Island  Restaurant turned out to be an eye opener. He was so surprised to see a sizeable number of Patrons spraying money in appreciation of  Leke's music. He went back and fashioned his tunes to what he heard Leke played.

SO FAR, SO GOOD

Makola is enjoying his dedication to music it seems as his weekends especially see him performing at private parties, public spots and various engagements. Known for a compact One-Man Band or with an accompanying Talking Drummer, Makola’s strength lies in his multi-instrumental capabilities and his cool mien which does not hint at a not too easy formative years. You can call him his own Salesman, someone who does not take much for granted especially his Fans. ‘My Fans are the best and when releasing my album, they will all be recognised’, he said.

REASONS SOME WOMEN DO FACE SURGERY

 FUNMI AJILA-LADIPO

'Reasons Some Women Do Face Surgery'

Regalia Fashion House boss, Funmi Ajila-Oladipo is a lady those familiar with the terrain in the 80s would easily recollect. Blessed with a great figure, Funmi was that beautiful damsel who graced pages of newspapers and calendars years back as face of the Nigeria Airways, in green and white uniform with the sailor’s cap. That is now history, a fine one though. In this interview with FOLORUNSHO HAMSAT, the ever dashing Funmi shares the story of her journey through life. Read on…

How would you describe the fashion industry over the years?

The industry has grown tremendously. The fact that people now wear the local fabrics is a pointer to the fact that we now appreciate what we have.

As a fashion expert, what are the simple mistakes that could spell doom in a fashion contest?
Mixing of colours could make a show to flop. Although, many do not know this or, probably they care less about it, but you need to pick the right colours at different times during a fashion show; the morning time, afternoon and evening. Everything must be right for a show to be successful, including planning of colours, it must be the right music and presentation of dresses must be right.

You have maintained a youthful and stylish looks in spite of age; what are the secrets?
My secret is God. I put my trust in God and I manage to eat well and take a couple of exercises always. I just eat healthy and try to be positive in everything. I just believe that life is simple. It’s a circle. When there is nothing to fight or think over, when you are in Christ you are no longer in crisis. You are a different person.

What is the best strategy to winning the audience at a fashion show?
Like I said earlier, the show must be right, stylish and colourful. That is the only way to win the confidence of the audience.

Are you involved in other ventures aside the fashion business?
No. I don’t really do other things. Fashion business is the major thing I do. You know I’ve been on this for over 24 years.

Do you buy the idea of women changing their looks and body shapes via surgery?
It depends on why they do that. Some people do it because of health challenges, while some do it for fashion. If you have to do that to correct your health troubles; why not? So, the reasons for that vary.

Unlike the past, you seem to have retreated to the social background
(Cuts in)… that is not correct. I still go out. But I don’t go to where I’m not invited.

Which way forward for the fashion industry?
We need encouragement from the government in this industry, and from the people. Look at Nollywood, for instance; no one gave them the chance in the beginning, not until they got recognition from outside that everybody now romances Nollywood. So, the fashion industry too needs encouragement to move forward.

What is the uniqueness of your fashion outfit?
Creativity.  The kinds of things I do are more artistic, they are more creative, they are afro-centric designs, things that are just you, they are things you can’t just pick up on the streets, things you would know that this is made by a creative designer.

What is your kind of music, food and colour?
For food, I love Boli (roasted plantain). For music, I love Gospel and Reggae. I love any fine colour.

How often do you thank God?
I thank God as often as I breathe.

At what age did you experience your first kiss and how did it feel?
That was a long time ago. I can’t remember that anymore.

Tell us about your childhood
I grew up in Ilupeju. My father is from Ekiti State, I was born in Ekiti State. My parents left my brother and me at very early age for Canada to study. We lived with our grandma. When my parents returned, we were brought to Lagos.

MY FATHER'S LAST ACTION-BARRISTER DEBE SYLVESTER OJUKWU

pix shows amb. dozie nwanna(nig dep high commissioner to the UK) and wife with barr debe ojukwu

My Father’s Last Action-Barr Debe Syvester Ojukwu
The 21ist of January,2012 saw a large gathering of Nigerians and friends of Nigerians celebrating the late Igbo leader ,Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in a Requiem Mass(Mass for the Dead);held at  the Westminister  Cathedral which was built between 1895 and 1903.The Cathedral which sits about 2000 people was more than half filled despite the cold winter weather conditions. The Mass itself a conclusion of series of  such  held over several weeks by various Catholic and Igbo groups in the United Kingdom is also unprecedented in terms of Igbo people’s  gathering in the UK.
The Deceased first son, Barrister Debe Sylvester Odumegwu Ojukwu (Akpunwa Nnewi)  who flew in from Nigeria with his daughter (Stella) to grace the history making Mass seemed to be warmly welcome with the distinguished guests of top Nigerians in the UK at the events, such as Amb.Dozie Nwanna, the deputy High Commissioner of Nigeria to the United Kingdom, Executives  of CANUK ,Chief Bimbo Roberts, Mr sola Ogunseitan and so on ,Councillor Ade Aminu of Lambeth Council, London. Also in attendance was the Deputy Mayor of Enfield and an impressive representation of  Igbo Communities in the UK, who chiefly powered the event. The  new date for the final burial we learnt is the 1st of March,2012.
Speaking during and after the 2 hours long event, Barrister Debe Ojukwu led tributes to his Father. Excerpts.
We have a spiritual connection through my Father to the United Kingdom. He lived here and spent his formative years in the United Kingdom. Epsom College, Lincoln College, Oxford University ,he had his formative years also at  Mans Cadet Officers School, his final years were again spent in the  UK ,transversing some of the most excellent Medical Institutions in the UK. Name it, the London Clinic,The Wellington Hospital, and the Royal Berkshire Hospital to mention some of them. We have by birth been seriously attached to the United Kingdom, UK has been a cradle, a sanctuary and has been a home for which we will be eternally grateful. Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu lived well, explaining in part our full presence here today. He was our Champion, explaining in order, our loss, our hopelessness in losing him among us. No single human being has been able to alter that trajectory called life, the sole prerogative of altering it has forever remained in the Sanctuary of the will of the Almighty. We can therefore not question God but take consolation in the life he has lived. And then fully abstract and appropriate what his life has portended. He has portended peace, unity and public service. I leave you here today to go back to Nigeria; I go back to Nigeria tomorrow morning with a message. I go back to Nigeria consoled and happy. The message I will take to Nigeria is that I met u, I met you well and I left you well.
I will rather  recount one  of my Father’s  last actions because in the last days he wanted to say much but because of the attack he lost his voice and when I was at Wellington Hospital with him, I remonstrated with him, I looked at him, he saw me and was moved. I told him,not for you but for the people, that God’s promise in the Bible is that his people will not perish and things you represent in people. If you leave us now, what will the People do? I touched his head and he brought back the last ounce of energy in him and press his head against me, so, when I told him I was going, he felt it so much. Then at the Royal Hospital, at each visit, I say the Rosary for two weeks with my family. He and I were Mass Servers in earlier years hence I always say the Cradle, he always loved   the Mass said in Latin, so in my last prayer with him when I took the Canticle of the Saints totally and when we said the Grace, he wanted to shout Amen. And he made this noise that I shook and wanted to ask who said that?. My wife, his Chief of Staff and everyone could not believe it. He wanted to say the prayers but the voice was failing gradually.
He was a very loving father, a consummate Administrator and Politician. That was how he came across to me, in our privacy, you see the real him playing out.
