Who is afraid of an automatic ticket?

Who is Afraid of an Automatic Ticket?

By Dr. JMO Ekundayo and Barrister Wale Ojo-Lanre,

The concept of an automatic ticket for an incumbent governor or president refers to a situation where a sitting governor or president, as a member of a political party, seeks re-election and is typically guaranteed the party's nomination without facing significant competition in a primary election. While the notion of incumbents receiving an automatic ticket is not new, it has precedents in established and advanced democracies globally.

It is a truism that certain critics view automatic ticket for an incumbent as an aberration that hampers internal democracy or competition within viable party members. They argue that competitive elections foster a sense of participation, inclusion and engagement within the party. However, it is essential to recognize that an automatic ticket policy does not inherently preclude internal discussion or engagement. A well-structured party can uphold democratic processes through thorough vetting and consensus-building among its members, even when there is no contested primary. This has happened in mature democracies around the world with the political parties of the incumbent waxing stronger. The fear of implosion within the ruling party if a consensus candidate is endorsed is therefore jejune, pedestrian and puerile.

Saliently and succinctly stated, it is indeed possible to unite behind a capable incumbent, while still fostering internal harmony and inclusion. In a typical friendly and dynamic political landscape, where apparent opposition to the incumbent is seemingly silent, supporting the incumbent governor can enhance party cohesion, allowing members to unanimously work together toward common goals rather than entrenching unhealthy competition against one another within the same party.

This scenario often arises due to several factors, including the governor's established political popularity, strong party loyalty, and perceived effective governance. In Ekiti, for instance, His Excellency, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, popularly call BAO by his numerous adherents and admirers, has distinguished himself as a unique political figure who understands the essence of collaborative and inclusive governance. He has displayed exemplary leadership acumen to most Ekitikete in colour, context and content, than any other man in the saddle since the creation of Ekiti State. His strategic and humane engagement with political personalities, regardless of their party affiliations, has endeared him to a broad spectrum of Ekiti residents. Furthermore, his uncommon style of interaction with the creme la creme of Ekiti such as the likes of Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, Barrister Femi Falana, SAN, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, Senator Adeyeye, Senator Olujinmi, etc. is unique and uncommon in the political disposition in the land of honour.

Remarkably, Governor Oyebanji has maintained close rapport with party leaders while initiating populist projects and sustainable programmes, along with various community development initiatives in the trajectory towards the *shared prosperity* mantra of his administration. He has successfully cultivated a near-perfect relationship with political stakeholders in Ekiti, earning unprecedented loyalty, even from members of opposition parties. This unyielding acceptance further solidifies the case for his automatic adoption across party lines.

Ultimately, endorsing an automatic ticket for him within his party could be a strategic decision, yielding significant benefits for both the party and the State. Contrary to the concerns that automatic ticket policy undermines internal democracy, it is crucial to reaffirm that such a policy does not diminish internal dialogue or engagement. A unified front around a capable incumbent, like Governor Oyebanji, can still foster internal cohesion whilst channeling party efforts and resources towards collective and rewarding objectives.

Additionally, the claim that eliminating competitive primaries will negatively impact economic activity is an oversimplification. It is widely known globally that good governance engenders and enhances economic activities much more than ephemeral gains that organizing a local primary election can garner for a set of people. In this vein, while campaigns naturally stimulate economic activity, the primary focus should be on effective governance at all times. Going this route will ensure resources tied up in lengthy primary battles could be redirected toward community development, building infrastructure, and programmes that directly benefit constituents. Political parties can also seek alternative funding methods and engagement strategies that do not depend exclusively on candidate campaigns for economic stimulation.

Concerns about power dynamics, particularly the risk of fostering an overly powerful incumbent, merit consideration, but an automatic ticket does not inherently lead to autocracy. An accountable incumbent, like Governor Oyebanji, can maintain transparency and governance structures that prevent the erosion of democratic practices. His proven trustworthiness and rapport with party members reduce the need for competitive pressures typically faced by lesser-known challengers.

While some may view a guaranteed re-election as a pathway to complacency, this does not universally hold true. An effective leader strives for excellence, motivated by a desire to fulfill campaign promises and enhance his legacy — traits Governor Oyebanji has consistently demonstrated. He has also shown a willingness to listen to critiques and comments from constituents, party members and opposing politicians, using this feedback mechanism to remain engaged and responsive to the electorates' needs.

The fear that an adoption policy will create internal division is unfounded, yet it is essential to emphasize that unity can thrive through shared vision and collective goals. The APC leadership—both in Ekiti and nationally— has fostered an inclusive environment, supporting various aspirations while promoting collaboration through effective relationship management. This was clearly manifested in the consensus endorsement of the erstwhile President Muhammadu Buhari for the second term ticket of the ruling APC in the 2019 presidential election.

Those raising concerns about potential legal challenges surrounding the adoption policy must remember that the APC is a living party, adhering to constitutional provisions and adopting potential amendments that allow for consensus around a sole candidate. By ensuring all voices are heard in the decision-making process, the party can limit the risk of legal disputes while enhancing its legitimacy.

On the topic of political evolution and youth engagement, the automatic adoption of Governor Oyebanji will inject new life into youth inclusion in governance and policymaking. His advocacy for youth involvement bridges the gap between traditional power structures and the aspirations of younger generations, fostering a future-oriented political landscape. Initiatives that prioritize youth engagement within the party will counteract any perceptions of exclusion that may emerge from the adoption policy.

Concerns about setting a dangerous precedent through an automatic ticket are unfounded. Recent examples from around the world demonstrate that incumbents can run with little opposition due to their popularity and party support. For instance, several incumbents in the United States, such as Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis and Iowa’s Governor Kim Reynolds, faced minimal challenges in their Republican primaries.

Given the unique political context of Ekiti, the apparent lack of opposition parties supports the strategic decision to adopt a candidate who has demonstrated both leadership and effectiveness. An automatic ticket for a respected incumbent like Governor Oyebanji serves as a pragmatic response to the current political landscape, emphasizing stability rather than monopolization of power.

In conclusion, while the adoption of an automatic ticket raises legitimate questions regarding democracy, governance, and party unity, it also presents an opportunity for strategic maneuvering that can enhance the effectiveness of both the party and governance in Ekiti. Ultimately, striking a balance between ensuring democratic practices and promoting effective leadership that addresses constituent needs is vital. Open dialogue and inclusive governance can mitigate concerns, resulting in a stronger, more cohesive party that effectively serves the people of Ekiti. The adoption of an automatic ticket policy is not a dismissal of democracy but rather a tactical approach to party politics aimed at promoting stability, unity, and efficiency. By eliminating unnecessary competition, the party positions itself to face the general election with strength and purpose, allowing the incumbent to focus on delivering good governance.

Ours is Ile-iyi, Ile-eye, and an automatic ticket can serve as a tool to uphold this vision and prevent APC Ekiti State from unnecessary internal political bickerings. Hence, automatic ticket for Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO) is good for the soul of the ruling party, APC.

ATPN election! Fadina ,others raise alarm ! Call for transparency .!

Fadina calls for a Transparent and Fair ATPN Electoral Process

One of the contestants for the

election of the Presidency of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN), Prince Oluwafemi Fadina has alleged lack of transparency , undue favoritism  and procedural fraud accompanying the on - going process

Addressing the press in Abuja ,Prince Fadina on behalf of him and other contestants  said a fair process is a pivotal moment that demands the highest standards of transparency, fairness, and procedural integrity.

"  However, recent developments raise serious concerns about insufficient preparedness, potential biases, and procedural flaws '

Prince Fadina ,CEO ,Jethro Tours and promoter of Awori Tourism highlighted his and others misgivings in the election process

Lack of Candidate Briefings: A Critical Oversight

It is troubling that candidates have not received adequate briefings from the AGM team. This omission represents a fundamental failure, as candidates deserve clear, thorough instructions on election procedures, rules, and expectations. The absence of these briefings undermines the credibility of the process and disadvantages candidates unfairly.

We call for an immediate, comprehensive briefing for all candidates to restore clarity and fairness to the electoral process.

2. Conflict of Interest: Candidates Operating from the Secretariat

Allowing a presidential candidate—or any candidate—to operate from the Association Secretariat during the election period is unacceptable. This situation creates a clear conflict of interest, compromises the Secretariat’s neutrality, and casts doubt on the election's impartiality.

To uphold fairness, we demand that all candidates vacate the Secretariat immediately, ensuring that it remains a neutral ground.

3. Chairman’s Conduct: Failing to Ensure a Free and Fair Election

The Chairman of the AGM has failed to foster an environment conducive to a free and fair election. The lack of a proper timetable, inadequate briefings, and rushed deadlines for delegate list submissions all indicate a poorly managed process. The Chairman’s role is to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability, yet the current approach falls far short.

We call for the immediate uprightness of the procedure to assure a level plain ground

4. Unreasonable Deadlines and Absence of Clear Guidelines

The directive from the Chairman to submit delegate lists within an unreasonably short timeframe is procedurally flawed. Effective electoral processes require ample time for scrutiny, verification, and transparency. Without a clear timetable and transparent guidelines, there is room for manipulation and bias.

We demand the following corrective actions be taken without delay:

Release of a Comprehensive Electoral Timetable: A detailed schedule outlining key activities—including candidate briefings, delegate verification, and voting procedures—must be published promptly.

Extension of Delegate Verification Deadline: The rushed deadline for delegate list submissions should be extended to allow thorough and transparent verification.

Implementation of Clear Electoral Guidelines: The AGM team must establish and communicate clear electoral bylaws to prevent ambiguity and bias.

Call on the  Chairman for Impartial Oversight: Given the

5. Legal and Ethical Implications

The current election process violates fundamental principles of fairness, equity, and transparency. The actions and inactions of the AGM leadership expose the association to potential legal challenges and reputational damage.

We insist on a transparent and fair election. The ATPN must demonstrate integrity and accountability, setting an example for other professional associations.

We demand immediate action on the issues highlighted above. Members are closely watching, and this moment will be judged by the AGM team’s commitment to fairness and justice

Yes to a Green Horn at NIHOTOUR! By Wale Ojo-Lanre, Esq.

Yes to a Green Horn at NIHOTOUR!

By

Wale Ojo-Lanre, Esq.

I feel compelled by instinct to respond to a recent article by the seasoned Malan Kabir Malan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Association of Nigerian Tourism Practitioners (ANTP). Published on the popular blog The African Gong, the article was titled “No to a Green Horn,” and it takes President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to task for, in Malan Kabir’s view, sidelining experienced tourism practitioners to appoint Dr. Abioye Fagade as the Director General of NIHOTOUR.

The piece, circulated widely by industry colleagues like my good friend Frank Meke on tourism platforms, paints Dr. Fagade’s appointment as a reckless choice—labeling him a “green horn” whose experience in tourism seems, to some, as nonexistent as a unicorn at a business meeting.

But let’s take a moment to explore the facts. Is this truly an oversight, or could it actually be a bold strategy? What if appointing a fresh face to lead NIHOTOUR isn’t as outlandish as it seems?

To understand this, let’s reflect on history. When Alhaji Nura Kangiwa, an acclaimed tourism practitioner, was appointed to the same role, the sector erupted in protest, with some in the industry bemoaning it as a problematic choice. Perhaps, by appointing a non-traditional figure this time, the President is sidestepping those entrenched expectations. It might seem unconventional, but sometimes an unexpected choice can bring a fresh perspective, challenging stagnant ideas and revitalizing a field from within.

And then there’s the term "green horn." What does it truly mean? Does it imply a lack of tourism credentials, or is it simply a label we use to resist change? While it’s easy to approach new leadership with skepticism, perhaps what we call “inexperience” could also be called “openness to new ideas.” There’s a chance—though some may doubt it—that this “green horn,” with his fresh perspective, may be precisely what the industry needs to see things differently.

Instead of dismissing Dr. Fagade outright, let’s consider the potential benefits of his appointment. He might innovate in ways seasoned practitioners have not. He may see tourism as a dynamic field with room for new approaches, potentially transforming local tourism into an engaging experience or redefining hospitality in a way that makes it memorable.

So here’s to the “green horn” leading NIHOTOUR! Let us remain open to his ideas, trusting that he will approach his role with both wisdom and enthusiasm. Here’s to embracing the unpredictability of his journey and the future of tourism in Nigeria. Cheers to fresh beginnings, new ideas, and an industry that will thrive as it evolves!

Gov Oyebanji's aides strategize on Youth Inclusion and Tourism Development in Ekiti State

Gov Oyebanji's aides strategize on Youth Inclusion  and Tourism Development in Ekiti State

On November 6, 2024, Mr. Ayo Ojo, the Technical Advisor on Youth Inclusion to the Ekiti State Governor, convened a strategic meeting with Ambassador Wale Ojo-Lanre, the Director-General of the Bureau of Tourism Development in his office .

The discussion centered on the future of tourism in Ekiti State, with a particular emphasis on the crucial role young people can play in driving tourism growth and stimulating local economic development.

Both leaders expressed mutual commitment to empowering Ekiti's youth, recognizing them as essential stakeholders in the region's tourism initiative. With Ekiti State blessed with abundant natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, they explored sustainable ways to leverage these assets through active youth participation.

During the meeting, Ojo-Lanre and Ojo addressed several pivotal topics aimed at revitalizing Ekiti's tourism market and attracting inward investments. They stressed the importance of enhancing the visibility and appeal of the state to transform it into a premier tourist destination, thereby facilitating economic progress. The leaders identified strategies to engage both domestic and international tourists, highlighting Ekiti's historical sites, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cultural offerings. They concurred that empowering young people with the requisite skills, resources, and platforms was vital for their active participation and substantial benefit from the tourism sector's growth.

A significant portion of their dialogue focused on fostering collaboration between the Bureau of Tourism Development and the youth sector. Emphasizing the need for an integrated approach, both leaders understood that effective policies and programs designed to engage Ekiti’s youth could emerge from such cooperation. By pooling resources and innovative ideas, they aimed to create a tourism model that preserves local culture while involving young people as enthusiastic participants. This collaborative strategy, they believed, would not only enhance youth engagement in the tourism industry but also position them as ambassadors of Ekiti’s rich heritage.

To bring their vision to fruition, Ojo-Lanre and Ojo identified several initiatives aimed at promoting youth involvement in tourism. First, they proposed incorporating educational tourism into school curricula to instill an appreciation for heritage among students from a young age. They also discussed implementing volunteer programs that would allow youth to gain hands-on experience supporting tourism initiatives. Additionally, they planned to launch arts and crafts projects, empowering young artisans to create souvenirs and other commercial products that celebrate Ekiti’s culture and provide tourists with authentic local keepsakes. Furthermore, the leaders considered the development of a comprehensive tourism master plan that would serve as a strategic blueprint for these initiatives.

The meeting resonated with Ojo-Lanre’s passionate assertions about the vital role of youth in tourism. He articulated guiding principles such as, “Youths are the soul of Tourism,” “No youth, no tourism,” and “Youth is tourism, Tourism is Youth.” For Ojo-Lanre, engaging young people transcended mere goal-setting; it was a foundational philosophy. He firmly believed that their involvement would be pivotal to the future success of Ekiti’s tourism endeavor. By empowering youth, he argued, Ekiti could cultivate a vibrant, inclusive, and robust tourism industry poised to benefit generations to come.

As the meeting drew to a close, both leaders expressed optimism about the prospects of tourism in Ekiti. They remained hopeful that these youth-centered initiatives, rooted in sustainable practices, would cultivate a thriving tourism sector that honors Ekiti’s heritage and propels the state's economic growth. By investing in youth and nurturing a tourism culture that recognizes their contributions, Ojo-Lanre and Ojo aspire to transform Ekiti into a destination that captivates visitors while inspiring and empowering its young residents.

EKSG WARNS AGAINST UNAUTHORIZED ACTIVITIES AT THE ABANIJORIN ROCK.

EKSG WARNS AGAINST UNAUTHORIZED ACTIVITIES AT THE ABANIJORIN ROCK.

Ekiti State Government has warned that anybody apprehended engaging in unauthorized activities and encroachment of any of the tourist sites in the State will henceforth be prosecuted in accordance with the State’s tourism law.

The State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, in a statement made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti, raised alarm over reports of “unlawful activities of certain individuals masquerading as “tour operators” to violate established protocols designed to protect the State’s natural landmark and tourism heritage at the Abanijorin Rock in Iyin Ekiti which is officially designated as a protected area under the State law”.

Reiterating the commitment of the State Government to the preservation of its natural and cultural heritage, Rt. Hon. Olatunbosun explained that the Tourism and Hospitality Licensing and Regulatory Law, 2020 was enacted to regulate the exploitation of the natural resources and ensure sustainable conservation initiatives to prevent unwarranted abuse.

He stressed that the Tourism apparatus in the State is well-planned and managed to protect the natural beauty of the tourist sites and would therefore not tolerate any attempt to undermine efforts at safeguarding the designated sites.

The Commissioner added that the Tourism law expressly states that “every tour business and tour activity taking place in Ekiti State shall be regulated and supervised by the Ministry” adding that it also added that “every tour operation in the State must be authorized with a valid letter of Authorization duly endorsed by the Ministry”.

“Abanijorin Rock is not only a breathtaking natural site but also a crucial part of Ekiti State’s cultural heritage. As such, it is officially designated as a protected area under state law. The integrity and preservation of this site are of utmost importance, it is essential that all visitors respect it sanctity”.

“To ensure compliance and protect the natural beauty of Abanijorin Rock, any organization, group, or individual wishing to visit or engage in any activities at the Rock must obtain explicit permission and approval from the Bureau of Tourism Development at the Governor’s Office”.

“Noncompliance with these regulations may result in legal actions against offending parties”.

He solicited the continued support of all stakeholders particularly the host communities to efforts of Government at protecting the State’s heritage.
